Of all the various trophies and awards created to honor excellence in the field of sports, perhaps none is more attractive or visually impressive than the Major League Baseball World Series trophy. Offered here is an example issued to Minnesota Twins infielder Al Newman in commemoration of the club's 1991 World Championship season. These trophies, produced by world-renowned jewelers Balfour, were presented only to team personnel and players. Player trophies in particular seldom come to market. This is the first 1991 Twins trophy we have ever offered and we can recall only having seen two other player examples at auction in the past 20 years. The imposing design features 26 gold-colored pennants bearing, respectively, the team name of each Major League franchise, displayed around the perimeter of the black wooden base. The interior metal design consists of a silver baseball, set within a gold band, atop which rests a crown. Displayed directly in front of this are the 1991 World Series press pins for the Twins and Braves. The gold-colored band affixed around the base reads "World Series Champions Minnesota Twins Al Newman 1991" in black lettering. The Twins defeated the Atlanta Braves in seven games in 1991 to capture their second World Championship in five years. The 1991 Series was also notable in that it marked just the second time in history that the home team won every game (1987 and 2001 are the only other times that has happened). Al Newman appeared in 118 games with the Twins in 1991, finishing the season with a .191 average, 0 home runs and 19 RBI. Newman batted .500 in the 1991 World Series, with a triple and an RBI in two at-bats. The trophy remains in Near Mint conditon. This is an extraordinary display piece worthy of any world-class Twins, World Series, or award collection. Height: 11 inches. Diameter: 7 inches.
