Ticket stub issued for Game 2 of the infamous 1919 World Series between the Chicago White Sox and Cincinnati Reds, held at Redland Field in Cincinnati on October 2nd. Encapsulated and certified as "Authentic" by PSA. Even before the World Series started, rumors were circulating that certain members of the White Sox were conspiring to “throw” the Series. For many fans and sportswriters those rumors appeared to be true after witnessing twenty-nine game winner Eddie Cicotte get knocked from the box in the fourth inning of Game 1, in what was an eventual 9-1 loss to the Reds. Following the Series, it took nearly a full year before the eight conspirators were publicly revealed and indicted for their actions. Although acquitted in a court of law, the now legendary “eight men out” could not escape the justice meted out by newly appointed Baseball Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis, who imposed a lifetime banishment for all those accused: Joe Jackson, Buck Weaver, Eddie Cicotte, Lefty Williams, Swede Risberg, Hap Felsch, Chick Gandil, and Fred McMullin. White Sox starting pitcher Lefty Williams made a better showing in Game 2 than Eddie Cicotte did in Game 1, but the result was the same as the Sox dropped their second straight game to the Reds, by a score of 4-2. The ticket stub (4.25 x 2 inches) displays a tiny area of discoloration along the base but is otherwise Excellent in its overall appearance. The 1919 World Series is still the most famous and talked about World Series in baseball history. As such, all tickets from the Series have a historical significance and universal appeal that transcends ticket collecting. Reserve $500. Estimate (open).
