Superb example of Boston Red Sox star "Smoky Joe" Wood from the scarce 1916 D381 Fleischmann Bakery issue. The D381 set is a scarce bread issue produced by New York City-based Fleischmann Bakery for distribution with its products. These large cards (2-3/8 x 4-7/8 inches) are printed on thin stock and feature a coupon at the bottom designed to be clipped away and exchanged (fifty coupons plus fifty cents) for a leather album designed to hold the cards. Many of the surviving examples are found with the coupon clipped, but ideally, the offered example is fully intact. The offered card displays a crisp image, light wear at the corners, and centering slightly towards the top left. It has been downgraded to FAIR 20 by SGC due to multiple creases and light surface wear visible on the black background surrounding Wood’s image. The blank reverse is clean. This is one of only four examples of Wood ever graded by SGC from the D381 set! The thin stock makes D381s especially fragile and susceptible to minor faults, including creases, tears, and wear at the corners. This is a very attractive and desirable sample card from one of the scarcest and most condition-sensitive prewar bakery-card issues. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+.
