Original oil on canvas of Hall of Fame pitcher Christy Mathewson by noted baseball artist Graig Kreindler. Signed by the artist in the lower left corner. The painting is unusual in that it captures Mathewson not as a member of the New York Giants, but the Norfolk Phenoms of the Virginia League. "Matty" joined the Phenoms in 1900 at age 19 and played with the club for most of the season before his contract was purchased by the New York Giants. The rest, as they say, is history. Graig Kreindler is one of the most prominent baseball artists in the field and a former winner of both the Norman Rockwell Museum Award and the Society of Illustrators’ Illustration Academy Award. In addition to his works having been displayed in various galleries and exhibitions, he has also been featured in articles published by both The New York Times, and The Wall Street Journal. This particular piece was specially commissioned by our consignor a number of years ago and represents the first Kreindler original painting we have ever offered. Mint condition. 12 x 18 inches. Framed to total dimensions of 18.25 x 24.25 inches. The substantial size/weight of this item requires that there will be an additional shipping charge for this lot.
