Offered here is what is universally regarded as the most attractive Mickey Mantle retail glove box ever issued, complete with its original glove. It is also just the second example of this Mantle rarity that we have ever offered. The colorful box, which houses a 1954-1956 Mickey Mantle Rawlings model "MM4" glove, features Mantle's image on the lid and all four sides. The lid pictures Mantle in uniform kneeling next to a large illustration of the glove, while the front and back sides of the box depict a large portrait of "The Mick". One of the many factors that sets this box apart from all others in terms of display value is the design of the two side panels, each of which pictures the same five identical photos of Mantle in uniform striking various poses: two batting (one from the left side, the other from the right), leaping, in a fielder's stance, and standing. Mantle was the king of New York at the time of this glove's issue and the striking design of the box was one that would certainly catch the eye of any youngster looking for a new glove to buy. This is a scarce box and we can only recall having seen three or four others. The box (8.25 x 8.25 x 6.5 inches) has had extensive professional restoration to numerous tears, abrasions, and splits along the seams. While the restoration is evident upon close inspection, it has been well executed and the box displays as Near Mint. The glove displays little-to-no use, with all of the manufacturer's stampings clearly legible. The leather remains supple and all of the lacing is intact. Minor corrosion affects most of the metal lacing holes (common for most gloves of this era); otherwise the glove is in Excellent to Mint condition. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $4,000+.
