Postwar Baseball - 1950s Cards
Outstanding bright and clean complete set of all twenty-three baseball players from the scarce 1959 Bazooka series, laminated to a large wood plaque several decades ago (when cards were very modest in value) to create a decorative display. This set may very well have been on this display since 1959. All the cards are very attractive, with vibrant colors, and strong corners. This was Bazooka's first baseball card set. All twenty-three players featured were, of course, very significant players of the day. Included in the 1959 Bazooka set are many particularly rare cards that make the assembly of a complete set very difficult. Missing only the Hank Aaron (name in yellow) variation for a complete master set. The 1959 Bazooka set has always been revered as one of the rarest and most difficult to collect of all Topps-related sets. Issued just one card per box of Topps Bazooka-brand bubble gum, the cards were intended to be hand cut by youngsters from the bottom of Bazooka boxes. You had to buy an entire box of gum to get just one card. This was an elite set to collect even in 1959. Rarely offered in complete set form, 1959 Bazooka is one of the few issues of the late 1950s that is scarce and has always had a mystique. This complete set, laminated to a wood plaque, represents a rare opportunity to acquire this scarce 1950s issue at an affordable level. Dimensions: 27.25 x 20.5 inches. Total: 23 cards. The substantial size/weight of this item requires that there will be an additional shipping charge for this lot. Reserve $500. Estimate (open).
