Chicago Cubs payroll check, dated June 20, 1923, issued to Hall of Fame shortstop Bobby Wallace, who has endorsed it on the reverse. PSA/DNA has encapsulated the check and graded the signature NM 7. Bobby Wallace signed personal or bank checks (with Wallace as the issuer) are unknown. This is one of only two Bobby Wallace endorsed checks we have ever seen, both of which are Cubs payroll checks (the other dates from 1924). Wallace, whose playing career ended in 1918, was working for the Cubs as a scout during the 1920s. The check, drawn on the Boulevard Bridge Bank of Chicago, Illinois, is made out to “Robt. J. Wallace” in the amount of $139.25. Signed by team owner “William L. Veeck” in black fountain pen (grading “9”) along the base (Veeck was the father of Hall of Fame owner Bill Veeck). Wallace has endorsed the check “R. J. Wallace” in black fountain pen on the reverse. The check (8.5 x 3.75 inches), which has normal bank cancellation stamps and holes (none affect either signature), displays a few tiny surface wrinkles and is otherwise in Near Mint condition. Reserve $500. Estimate (open).
