Official National League (Heydler) ball signed in black fountain pen by 18 members of the fabled 1927 World Champion New York Yankees. Graded EX-MT 6 by PSA/DNA. The company has graded the signatures 7 (on average) and the ball 4, resulting in a final grade of 6. (Although 5.5 would be the average of the two scores, PSA/DNA notes in its accompanying letter that a plus or minus of 0.5 can be awarded for eye appeal). The 18 signatures appearing on the ball are those of Ruth, Gehrig, Huggins (Mgr.), Combs, Hoyt, Lazzeri, Pennock, Pipgras (sweet spot), Grabowski (sweet spot), Meusel, Dugan, Koenig, Collins, Shawkey, Shocker, Ruether, Gazella, and Moore. While all 1927 New York Yankee balls are highly prized by collectors, this ball is especially desirable because it was signed at the 1927 World Series, where the "Bronx Bombers" cemented their legacy as baseball's greatest team by sweeping the Pittsburgh Pirates. That unique provenance is conveyed by the vintage black fountain-pen notation below Ruth's signature that reads "World Series 1927." (The fact that this is a National League ball most likely indicates that it was signed at one of the two games in Pittsburgh). The ball is moderately toned and has been coated with a layer of protective shellac, but all of the manufacturer's labels remain clearly legible. The fame and lore associated with the 1927 Yankees has elevated the club to a status enjoyed by few sports teams in history. Understandably, team-signed balls from that historic year remain at the forefront of the hobby and confer a special status upon any collection in which they reside. This is an outstanding 1927 New York Yankees team-signed ball and one of the finer examples we have handled. Full LOA from PSA/DNA. Reserve $10,000. Estimate (open).
