Presented is the actual original painting of Hall of Fame pitcher Satchel Paige of the St. Louis Browns used to produce card #220 in the 1953 Topps series. The 1953 Topps #220 Satchel Paige is universally recognized as one of the great classics of all postwar baseball cards. Originally from the collection of the legendary Sy Berger, this artwork was the highlight of the landmark auction of 117 original 1953 Topps paintings personally consigned to REA in 2010 by "The Father of the Bubble Gum Card." Interestingly, since that historic auction, only three other 1953 Topps painting from the Sy Berger collection has resurfaced in the marketplace (miraculously we have two additional Hall of Famers in this auction). We know they're out there, but apparently collectors are keeping them! This stunning artwork has been consigned directly from the original purchaser in the 2010 auction, where this artwork realized $58,750. 1953 Topps is one of the most popular sets ever issued, and is the only 1950s set issued by Topps to utilize original paintings. The artwork measures 3.25 x 4.75 inches. Standard production-related glue remnants on the front and blank reverse. Excellent condition. Ex-Sy Berger Personal Collection. Encapsulated Authentic by SGC. Reserve $10,000. Estimate (open).
