Fascinating collection of one of Topps' most unusual nonsport issues ever produced: "Flying Things." From 1966 to 1975 Topps distributed a series of Styrofoam airplanes designed as several different "Flying Things," such as a hotdog, skeleton, cigar, eyeball, and many more. They were offered for retail sale; kids could purchase at their local candy store for 10 cents each in the early years and later increased the price to 25 cents each by 1975. Each "plane," which featured the likeness of a different item, was fashioned in three pieces (a body, wing, and tail) that could easily be assembled for a quick launch. This amazing grouping, representing four different series, consists of the following: 1) 1966 Series: Two wrappers and one "Flying Skeleton" (all pieces intact). One wrapper grades Vg and the other is Pr. 2) 1970 Series: Complete box of twenty-four unopened packs plus three extra packs, for a total of twenty-seven unopened packs. The packs range from Gd to Vg-Ex, averaging Vg overall. Also included is an empty display box (Pr). 3) 1971 Series: One unopened pack (Vg), four 10-cent wrappers (three Fr and one Pr), one 15-cent wrapper (Fr), and one "Flying Kiss" (all pieces intact). 4) 1975 Series: Four complete boxes each with twenty-four unopened packs plus twenty-two extra packs, for a total of 118 unopened packs (except for five packages that are opened on one end). One complete box is unopened with the original factory tape still intact and accompanied by a COA from the Topps Vault. Each "Flying Thing" is packaged in a clear plastic bag. Also included are two empty display boxes (both Pr). This group of material would be a superb addition to any collection of nonsport card-related items. Reserve $200. Estimate (open).
