Pair of blankets issued in 1943 and 1946, respectively, to University of Minnesota defensive end Paul Mitchell in honor of his selection to the collegiate All America Football team. Paul Mitchell was one of only a few college players to be named to two All American teams. After graduating in 1943 and serving in the Navy during World War II, he was recognized one again and was allowed to take part in the 1946 Chicago Charities College All-Star Game, which matched the collegiate All-America team against the reigning NFL Championship team.
That fall, Mitchell began his professional football career with the Los Angeles Dons of the All-America Football Conference. He also later played with the New York Yanks of the National Football Conference. Each blanket, one blue (72 x 58 inches) and one white (87 x 62 inches), features a large, patriotic red-white-and-blue All-America shield patch bearing the respective year. The 1943 patch displays a tiny abrasion to the fabric; otherwise both are in Near Mint condition, looking much like they did when originally issued. These blankets have been consigned directly by a member of the Mitchell family and represent one of nine lots in this auction featuring material from Paul Mitchell's personal collection. Total: 2 blankets.
