Yankee Stadium has played host to many significant baseball moments during its storied past, but one of the most overlooked occurred on September 11, 1928. On that date, in a game against the Philadelphia Athletics, Ty Cobb made his final appearance in a Major League game. Offered here is an exceedingly rare ticket stub from that historic game that has been encapsulated and graded VG 3 by PSA. This is the ONLY example of this ticket ever evaluated by PSA and we have never seen or heard of another. Cobb's farewell appearance on a Major League ball field took place with little fanfare or ceremony. With the A's trailing 5-3 in the top of the ninth inning, Cobb was sent to the plate as a pinch-hitter for third baseman Jimmy Dykes to start the inning against Yankees hurler Hank Johnson. Cobb meekly popped out to shortstop Mark Koenig for the first out and returned to the dugout. At the time, few fans could have realized that it would be the last time anyone would see the legendary "Georgia Peach" in a Major League game, especially since there was two weeks left in the regular season and the A's only trailed the Yankees by two and a half games in the standings. Six days later, on September 17th, Cobb officially stated that he was retiring from baseball at the end of the season, telling reporters "I'm just baseball tired and want to quit." As noted we have never seen another ticket example from Cobb's final game, making this one of the rarest and most significant tickets in the field. The stub (1.25 x 3 inches), issued for a "Reserve Seat Lower Stand," bears the preprinted date "Tuesday Sept. 11" on the front. Moderate handling wear is evident, including a few small creases and a tiny amount of paper loss on the reverse. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open).
