Graded NM-MT 8 by PSA. Only three examples grade higher out of 681 examples evaluated by PSA to date. Magnificent ultra-high-grade example of Eddie Mathews’ rookie card. In addition to being his rookie card, 1952 Topps card #407 Eddie Mathews is also one of only a few key Hall of Famers in the rare high-number series, and as the last card in the set, is also a condition rarity. Just as card #1 Pafko was subject to wear due to gravitating to the top of the pile, #407 Mathews was also subject to excessive wear at the bottom of the pile. In anything even resembling high grade, this has always been a very difficult card for anyone putting together a quality 1952 Topps set. The image on the front of this example is centered just a hint to the left (far better than normally seen as this card is frequently encountered with centering issues), with original gloss, brilliant colors, and four sharp corners displaying light touches of wear at the tips. The reverse of the card is perfectly clean with bold print. This is an extremely attractive high-grade example of this important condition rarity that be worthy of any high-quality 1952 Topps set or Hall of Fame rookie-card collection. Reserve $10,000.
