Prewar Baseball - 1910s and 1920s Cards
Collection of 5 vintage baseball postcards spanning the years 1908 to circa 1950. Unless otherwise noted, all of the cards measure approximately 3.5 x 5.5 inches and have not been addressed or mailed. The highlight of the group is a real-photo team postcard of the 1912 World Champion Boston Red Sox produced by the "Photo Art Shop, Swampscott, Mass" (encapsulated by SGC, with the card certified as "Authentic"). The team is pictured posing together in front of the grandstands at Fenway Park, with each player identified in print upon his respective image, including Tris Speaker, Harry Hooper, Joe Wood, Jake Stahl (player/manager), Bill Carrigan, Hugh Bedient, Heinie Wagner, and Duffy Lewis. The card, which has been slightly trimmed along the top edge (possibly the right edge as well), displays a tiny chip in the lower right corner, and a few light creases. Without reference to the trim, the card remains in Very Good condition overall. The remaining 4 cards are as follows: 1) Cy Young real-photo postcard. Young is pictured posing with his dog on his farm, circa 1950. There are directions written in pencil on the reverse; otherwise Ex. 2) Miller Huggins. The postcard features a colorized image of Huggins posing on the field as a member of the Reds. He is identified in print along the base: "Huggins/Second Baseman/Par Excellence." Addressed, mailed, and postmarked "Jan 1908." There is a moderate area of paper loss on the reverse; otherwise Vg-Ex. 3) Ty Cobb birthplace. The card features a photo of the house in which Ty Cobb was born on December 18, 1886, in Georgia. A 1911 copyright is printed on the front. Ex-Mt. 4) 1926 World Champion St. Louis Cardinals. The composite image features portraits of 23 team members, all of whom are identified in print below their respective photos, including Rogers Hornsby (player/manager), Alexander, Bottomley, Haines, Hafey, and Southworth. Gd-Vg, with a staple hole, light border stains, and adhesive residue on the reverse from its having once been mounted in an album. Total: 5 postcards. Reserve $500. Estimate (open).
