This bronze/copper statue, which depicts a uniformed player in a pitching pose, is often referred to as the "Walter Johnson" statue because of its likeness to the Hall of Fame hurler. However, we know that Johnson never posed for the piece and it was never marketed as being Walter Johnson. Both the name of the manufacturer, and copyright date, "A.C. Rehberger Co. - 1929" are engraved along the edge of the rear base. The A. C. Rehberger Company, which was founded in 1912 and specialized in hand-molded, handcrafted metal sculptural figurines, is best known today for producing the first Oscar statuette in the 1920s. This statue (13 inches high) displays moderate surface wear and is in Excellent condition overall. Reserve $500. Estimate (open).
