Rare, possibly unique, Chicago Cubs 1929 championship pennant. This is the only example of this pennant we have ever seen and it comes with strong provenance. It was consigned to us at the National Convention in Chicago this summer. Our consignor's grandfather attended the 1929 World Series and the pennant, along with a ticket stub from the game, were carefully saved by him. The pennant has remained in the family since that time and has never before been offered publicly. The maroon-felt pennant displays a large "C" in the center of which are the words "UBS" and "HAMPS." To the right of that display is the year, "'29." It should be noted that all of the letters and numerals are appliqued in white felt, as opposed to paint. This is an extremely well-crafted piece and was probably much more expensive than other pennants sold at the stadium, which might explain its great rarity today. The pennant (20.5 inches), which is complete with its original tassels, displays a tack hole in each of the two corners, as well as 7 small insect holes scattered throughout (2 are only visible on the reverse and affect just the maroon felt covered by the white lettering). The notch at the end of the pennant appears to be the original design given the precise angles of the cut and lack of any fraying along the edges of the material. Aside from the few insect holes (all of which are fairly unobtrusive), the pennant remains in Excellent to Mint condition. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open).
