Original news photo capturing the 1927 World Champion New York Yankees in a classic team pose. Accompanied by an LOA from PSA/DNA certifying it as an original Underwood & Underwood Type 1 news-service photograph. Twenty-nine members of the club are pictured here posing together in front of the grandstands at Yankee Stadium, including Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, manager Miller Huggins, Herb Pennock, Earle Combs, Wait Hoyt, Tony Lazzeri, Bob Meusel, Bob Shawkey, and Mark Koenig. The original paper news caption remains affixed to the reverse, which identifies the club as "Champions of 1927" (a portion of the news caption remains adhered to front base of the photo). An "Underwood & Underwood" credit stamp appears on the reverse, as do a few pencil notations. The 1927 New York Yankees, powered by Ruth, Gehrig, and the other members of baseball's famed Murderers' Row, are still considered by many historians to be the greatest team ever assembled. Their World Series performance that year certainly affirmed that title, as the Yankees easily swept the Pirates in four straight games. The photo (8.5 x 6.5 inches), which offers exceptional clarity, displays minor rippling, a few extremely light surface wrinkles, and a tiny spot of discoloration on the image of team trainer Doc Woods. In Excellent condition overall. Reserve $500. Estimate (open).
