Original Acme Newspictures photo of Lou Gehrig dating from his second full season with the Yankees in 1926. Certified as an original Type 1 photo by PSA/DNA. This is an outstanding early Gehrig photo! The photo captures the "Iron Horse" in uniform at Yankee Stadium as he looks pensively at the camera. This photo was obviously cropped when printed, as one can see the hand of a teammate on Gehrig's right shoulder. The original paper news caption remains affixed to the reverse and reads "With The American League Champions - Lou Gehrig, first baseman of the New York Yankees, winners of the American League Pennant race." The date stamp "Oct 2 1926" appears on the reverse, which was the date of Game 1 of the 1926 World Series between the Yankees and St. Louis Cardinals. Gehrig enjoyed a fine season in 1926, finishing the year with 16 home runs, 112 RBI, and a .313 batting average. He fared even better in the Series, batting .348 with 4 RBI in the Yankees' seven-game loss to St. Louis. The proprietary stamps of both "Acme Newspictures" and "Reference Dept. - N. E. A." appear on the reverse (Acme Newspictures was a division of the Newspaper Enterprise Association, which was one of the nation's first news syndicates). The photo (5 x 8 inches) displays a few minor surface wrinkles and is in Excellent condition overall. Reserve $300. Estimate (open).
