International Film Service news photo of Chicago White Sox third-baseman Buck Weaver. Certified as Type 1 by PSA/DNA. The photo captures Weaver in a bust-length image as he smiles for the camera. This photo was obviously published in the fall of 1920 as indicated by the original paper news caption on the reverse that reads "Indict Eight White Sox Players: George 'Buck' Weaver." Weaver, along with Joe Jackson and six other members of the Chicago White Sox, was formally indicted for his part in the 1919 "Black Sox" scandal on October 22, 1920. Prior to the indictment, on September 28th, all eight conspirators had been suspended from the White Sox pending the outcome of the investigation. Weaver always maintained his innocence in the affair, although he did admit to being present when others were discussing the fix. That alone was enough for the newly elected baseball commissioner, who permanently banned Weaver and his eight coconspirators for life despite the fact that all were acquitted of the charge in a court of law. An International Film Service credit stamp appears on the reverse along with an editorial marking. A modern white label has been affixed to the reverse that bears the printed ink notation "Black Sox/Buck Weaver/Original Photo." The photo (6.5 x 8.5 inches) displays a few minor creases and is in Very Good to Excellent condition overall. Reserve $300. Estimate $500+.
