Official American League (MacPhail) ball signed in black felt-tip pen (grading "8") on a side panel by Hall of Fame executive Bill Veeck. Veeck, who is best known today for signing little person Eddie Gaedel to a St. Louis Browns contract n 1951, was also instrumental in fostering integration in baseball. In 1947 he signed Larry Doby to a Cleveland Indians contract, making Doby the first African American player in American League history. Veeck retired from baseball in 1980 and died six years later. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1991. That five-year gap between his death and his Hall of Fame induction is the reason why Veeck single-signed balls are scarce today. This is just the second example we have offered and we have seen very few others offered at auction during the past fifteen years. The ball, which dates to the 1977-1980 manufacturing period, displays light, displays scattered light-to-moderate age toning and light, but legible, manufacturer's stampings. In Very Good to Excellent condition overall. Full LOA from PSA/DNA. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000+.
