1939 Baseball Centennial first-day cover, commemorating the career of Walter Johnson, signed by Johnson in black fountain pen along the top border. Encapsulated by PSA/DNA, with the signature graded NM-MT 8. One of the appealing features of this first-day cover is that it includes an actual photo of Johnson (as manager of Cleveland) affixed to the front, below which is a brief synopsis of his career totals. The envelope (6.5 x 3.5 inches), which is addressed and stamped, is postmarked “Cooperstown N. Y. Jun 12 1939” and features a “First Day of Issue” cancelation stamp. Light adhesive residue on the reverse from having once been mounted in an album; otherwise it is in Excellent to Mint condition. Reserve $300. Estimate $1,000+.
