Original Wide World news photo capturing Wilt Chamberlain scoring his record 100th point in a game against the New York Knickerbockers at Hershey Sports Arena, in Hershey, Pennsylvania, on March 2, 1962. Accompanied by an LOA from PSA/DNA certifying it is a "Type 1 Original News Service Photograph." Both a Wide World credit stamp and original paper news caption, dated 3/3/62, appear on the reverse. This is the only original news photo we have ever seen that captures Chamberlain recording the shot that netted him his 100th point in the game, making it one of the rarest, not to mention historically significant, basketball photos in the hobby today. The reason for its rarity is because the NBA was not nearly as popular back then as it was today. College basketball regularly drew bigger crowds and more attention than NBA games and, as a result, fewer reporters covered the pro contests. For Chamberlain's record-setting game, there were no members of he local New York media present, and the game was not televised, so we don't even have video footage of the event. All that remains are a few photos from the wire services, most of which picture Chamberlain after the game. We cannot imagine a more historically significant basketball photo than this image, which captures not only the greatest scoring feat in NBA history, but one of the greatest single-game accomplishments in any sport. The photo (7 x 9 inches) displays a few minor creases and editorial markings along the margin. In Excellent condition overall.
