Graded FAIR 20 by SGC. E107 Breisch-Williams of Chicago pitcher Roy Patterson. In 1898 Charles Comiskey's St. Paul Saints, the best team in the Western League, lost an exhibition game in Duluth to the local nine. The Duluth Dukes prevailed that day behind the pitching of Roy Patterson, who so impressed Comiskey that he was rewarded with a St. Paul Saints contract the following year. When the American League declared itself a major league in 1901, Patterson was on the mound April 24 in the league's very first game. Since the day's other games were rained out, Patterson became the AL's first winning pitcher, downing the Cleveland Blues 8-2. Bright and crisp, both front and back, with perfect centering, no creases, and even wear to the corners. The front has an outstanding Excellent appearance, harshly downgraded by SGC due to a few tiny insignificant areas of surface paper loss on the reverse from having been removed from a scrapbook long ago. Patterson's Major League career spanned the years from 1901 to 1907, all with Chicago. This is a very striking and outstanding example of one of the most noteworthy non-HOFers featured in the the legendary E107 set. Reserve $300. Estimate (open).
