Black-and-white photo of legendary golfer Bobby Jones (1902-1971), inscribed in black ink, "For/Wesley [last name illegible]/Best wishes/Bob Jones." Both the inscription and signature grade "9/10." In 1948 Jones was diagnosed with syringomyelia, a rare degenerative disease of the central nervous system, similar to ALS, that confined him to a wheelchair for most of his later years. Given the less-than-fluent pen strokes seen here, this photo was most likely signed by Jones late in life, when his illness was becoming progressively worse. Considered by most to be the greatest golfer ever, Jones was a founder of the Augusta National Golf Club and a designer, with Alister MacKenzie, of the course. Among his many feats, Jones accomplished what many felt impossible, winning all four majors in the same year, 1930 (the U.S. and British Opens and their respective Amateur Championship events), only to retire immediately afterwards. The photo (7.25 x 9 inches) is in apparent Near Mint condition and has been matted and framed together with a descriptive plaque to total dimensions of 21.5 x 16 inches. Auction LOA from James Spence/JSA.
