Graded GOOD 30 by SGC. 1888 N172 Old Judge card featuring one of the most unusual and memorable images to ever appear on a baseball card: New York Hall of Famer Buck Ewing and the New York Giants mascot, Willie Breslin (Ewing & Mascot, N.Y.'s). In addition to being a very desirable Hall of Famer, the pose on this card makes it one of the most interesting images to appear in the Old Judge set. The youngster is dressed in a miniature New York Giants uniform, true to form in every detail to those worn by the players. The mascot was even popular enough to warrant his own card in the 1887 Goodwin set (and was also issued in the N173 Old Judge large-cabinet series). The offered card displays light, even wear to the corners, and the photo contrast is a little light. The blank reverse displays light traces of erased writing, which accounts for the modest assigned grade. This is an attractive and relatively affordable example of one of the most unusual and memorable of all nineteenth-century cards featuring one of the most prominent Hall of Famers of the era. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000.
