Vintage mounted albumen photo of Confederate general Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson. Although no photographer or date is listed, this image of Jackson is one of two taken in November 1862, at the photography studio of Nathaniel Routzahn in Winchester, Virginia (based upon other examples we have seen). One of the Confederate Army's most gifted generals, Jackson received his famous nickname at the first Battle of Bull Run in 1861. Unfortunately, Jackson was accidentally shot by Confederate pickets at the Battle of Chancellorsville on May 2, 1963. Although he survived the attack (his left arm had to be amputated) he died of pneumonia eight days later, thereby dealing a crippling blow to the Confederate Army. The photo (6 x 8.25 inches) displays moderate-to-heavy foxing and is otherwise in Excellent to Mint condition. The slightly larger mount (6.25 x 8.5 inches) displays heavy paper loss and paper residue on the reverse from having once been mounted in an album. Reserve $300. Estimate $1,000+.
