Rare brass button issued in commemoration of George Washington's Presidential inauguration in 1789. This piece, which was worn proudly by Washington's supporters at the time of his election, represents the first political button and is the precursor to all of the political campaign buttons that soon followed. As such, it is one of the most desirable and significant political items dating from the dawn of the Republic. The initials "GW" are featured in the center of the button, with the wording along the top of the perimeter reading "Long Live The President." The button (1.25 inches in diameter) is tarnished with age and is missing its original attachment loop on the reverse. In Very Good condition overall. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500.
