Graded VG-EX+ 4.5 by BGS. Outstanding example of an M101-2 Sporting News supplement featuring legendary Hall of Famer Christy Mathewson. This sepia-tone premium set was issued with the Sporting News between the years 1909 and 1913. Each premium was issued on only a single day (August 5, 1909 in this case) and is dated in the upper right or left. Their method of issue and the thin paper stock on which they are printed make these unusual and striking premiums particularly susceptible to damage. This example displays a flawless image of Mathewson pitching, with light corner wear, a few light wrinkles, and a clean blank reverse. This is a very attractive example that represents an exciting, relatively affordable opportunity to acquire a card-related Mathewson supplement dating from his playing days.
