In 1961 the J. B. Williams Company recruited reigning American League MVP Roger Maris to help promote its line of aftershave lotions: Aqua Velva and Lectric Shave. On each respective box of aftershave was a printed form that could be mailed in and, along with twenty-five cents, be redeemed for an exclusive 11 x 16 lithograph of Roger Maris created by noted artist Robert Riger. Offered here is an original 1961 box of Aqua Velva, complete with its bottle of aftershave, together with a vintage magazine page featuring a full-page advertisement for the lithograph. Ideally, the advertisement has been signed in blue Sharpie by Maris (grading "9/10") atop his likeness. The box (3.5 x 1.5 x 6 inches) features a special top flap promoting the Roger Maris lithograph, with the redemption form printed on the side. The magazine advertisement (7 x 10 inches) pictures an image of the lithograph as well as information about it and an order form that can be clipped and returned to the company. This is a rare combination and the first example we have seen of either piece. The fact that Maris has signed the advertisement only adds to its appeal. The box displays a number of moderate tears, including a few on the order form, but is complete as issued. In Very Good condition. The magazine page has been affixed to a cardboard backing and aside from moderate toning is in Excellent condition overall. Total: 2 items (original Aqua Velva box and bottle of aftershave, and magazine advertisement). Auction LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $300. Estimate (open).
