Boston Red Sox payroll check, dated August 21, 1985, made out to Roger Clemens in the amount of $551 and signed by traveling secretary John Rogers. Clemens’ endorsement on the reverse features a rare example of his full signature, “Wm. Roger Clemens.” The signature has been boldly penned in blue ink and graded MINT 9 by PSA/DNA (the check has been encapsulated by the company as well). The check, drawn on the Shawmut County Bank, N.A. of Cambridge, Massachusetts, displays the Red Sox team name on the front and is labeled “Road Account.” Clemens was in his second full season with the Red Sox in 1985. “The Rocket” started fifteen games that summer, winning seven and losing five. The following year marked his “breakout season” as he won twenty-four games, against only four losses, and led the Red Sox to their first pennant in eleven years. Today, Clemens is considered by many to be one of the greatest pitchers in baseball history. His 348 career wins rank eighth on the all-time list and he has won a record seven Cy Young Awards. The check (8.25 x 3 inches) displays normal cancellation stamps on the reverse and is in Excellent to Mint condition. Auction LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $200. Estimate $400+.
