Graded VG 40 by SGC (submitted by REA). This is the ONLY example graded at this level with none higher! Exceptional sample of New York Giants Hall of Famer Christy Mathewson from the rare set which has been referred to by advanced collectors as "Orange Borders" for many decades. In 1910 the "Geo. Davis Co., Inc." and the "P.R. Warren Co." of Massachusetts together issued this striking and extremely rare package-design set, with two cards featured on each box of "American Sports - Candy and Jewelry" (one on the front, and one on the back). It is rare to find even common-player sample cards from this issue, let alone a key Hall of Famer such as Christy Mathewson, who is posed hands-at-chest as on his popular T206 Dark Cap card. This is a very attractive card, with full borders, a crisp image, strong colors, and a single faint crease in the top left corner. The card features an irregular cut along the borders as expected since this set was intended to be handcut by kids. The blank back of the card is clean. This is a very attractive example of one of the most elusive of all Christy Mathewson cards. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $2,160
