Prewar Baseball - E Candy Cards
Graded NM 84 by SGC. This is the ONLY example graded at this level with none higher out of forty-seven cards evaluated to date. Tremendous ultra high-grade example of New York Giants Hall of Famer Rube Marquard from the E96 Philadelphia Caramel set. E96 cards are very similar in design to their E95 counterparts and can most easily be distinguished by the attractive red-printed checklist of the complete set on the reverse of each card. They were issued on fairly thin stock, which did not easily escape damage or wear well over the years. This card is bright and crisp, with a bold red background, a perfect surface with no creases, four strong corners with just the slightest hint of wear to the upper right, and outstanding centering (very slightly to the bottom). Tiny areas of toning are visible along the right border in two places under close inspection (even with Marquard's head and waist) but do not detract from the overall visual appeal in any way. The reverse features a very boldly printed checklist for the set centered to the left. This card is in extraordinary condition, especially for a caramel card, which because they were issued with candy, one card per package, tend to survive in lesser condition than their more common tobacco-card counterparts. SGC has only graded thirteen cards (of any subject) NM or higher from the E96 set out of over 1,000 cards evaluated to date! This is a stunning ultra high-grade example of one of Marquard"™s most striking cards from one of the most popular and colorful of all "E" card issues, and one that would be a worthy addition to any extremely high quality classic Hall of Fame, E96, or sample-card collection. The equivalent SMR value is $1,500. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $2,370
