Real-photo postcard signed by Manfred von Richthofen (1892-1918), famed German World War I pilot, known as "The Red Baron." The bust-length image of von Richthofen, picturing him in his military uniform, has been flawlessly signed "Frhr. V. Richthofen" in black fountain pen (grading "10"). The postcard (3.25 x 5.5 inches) has been affixed to a blank front page of a German book titled Der Rote Kampfflieger (Berlaa Ullstein & Co., Berlin, 1917). Von Richthofen, who is credited with 80 air-combat victories during his career, is probably the most celebrated military pilot in history. His famous nickname of "The Red Baron" came about as a result of his German title of nobility, Freiherr, (which is often translated as Baron), and the fact that he had all of his planes painted red. A national hero in Germany, Von Richthofen was eventually killed in battle on April 21, 1918. Von Richthofen's early death, and the fact that he was somewhat reclusive during his short life has resulted in the rarity of his signature today. This is an outstanding example, especially given the fact that he is presented in full military dress. The postcard remains in Excellent to Mint condition. The book (4 x 6 inches) has been rebound; otherwise in Very Good to Excellent condition, with light foxing to the pages. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $2,000++. SOLD FOR $5,036
