Original-owner collection of twenty-one different Cincinnati Reds N172 Old Judges. All cards have outstanding high-quality images and bear an 1888 copyright. Any newly discovered N172 Old Judge collection is exciting, but this was also a particularly unusual (in fact, unique) collection in that all of the cards were Cincinnati Reds. These cards were saved by our consignor's grandfather, who lived in the Cincinnati area (and was obviously a fan!), and have remained in the family's possession since the year of issue. Collections of N172s that are new to the modern collecting world are few and far between at this late date. This group includes five Ex to Ex-Mt, ten Vg to Vg-Ex, and six Fr to Gd (with superior appearance despite their technical grade due to issues on the reverse). Six cards have been graded and encapsulated by SGC (all submitted by REA). In the following listing, cards are identified by the numbers provided by the comprehensive Old Judge book checklist. This collection consists of the following: #16-2 Baldwin, 16-5 Baldwin, 66-1 Carpenter, 66-3 Carpenter, 140-3 Duryea, 142-1 Earle (EX 60), 231-2 Holliday (VG/EX 50), 231-6 Holliday, 253-1 Keenan, 331-3 Mullane, 331-5 Mullane (EX 60), 331-6 Mullane (EX 60), 346-4 Nicol, 346-5 Nicol, 381-2 Reilly (EX 60), 381-3 Reilly, 403-2 Schmelz, 423-3 Smith, 423-4 Smith, 473-3 Viau, and 473-4 Viau (EX/NM 80). This is a very clean group of Old Judges that is completely fresh to the hobby and has been untouched for decades. Total: 21 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,500+.
