Official American League (Harridge) ball signed by Hall of Fame outfielder Ty Cobb. The legendary "Georgia Peach" has boldly signed the ball on a side panel in his customary green ink, with the signature grading "9/10." This ball was examined by James Spence Authentication utilizing a video spectral comparator, which allows for the observation of latent writing and/or markings. That examination revealed that a second, unidentified signature was removed from the ball on a side panel. It must be noted that the former signature is not visible with the naked eye and in all outward appearances this example displays as a single-signed Cobb ball. Based upon the manufacturer's stampings, this ball was produced between the years 1940 and 1945, a period when Cobb was still in good health and making many public appearances. A Cobb single-signed ball is a significant addition for any advanced collection, especially in high grade, but its prohibitive cost (in addition to rarity) usually makes it a difficult acquisition for most collectors. A rarely seen example such as this, while technically not "single signed" in the literal sense, offers the same aesthetic appeal and potentially provides a more affordable alternative. This is a great-looking Ty Cobb signed ball with an outstanding signature! The ball displays only light fading to the manufacturer's stampings and is in Excellent to Mint condition overall. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500. SOLD FOR $5,332.50
