Program and ticket stub from the 1934 All-Star Game held on July 10th at the Polo Grounds in New York. It was in this game, only the second in All-Star history, that Carl Hubbell entered the annals of baseball lore by striking out, in succession, five of the greatest sluggers in baseball history: Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Jimmie Foxx, Al Simmons, and Joe Cronin. Despite Hubbell's performance, the American League battled back from a 4-0 deficit to eventually defeat their National League rivals 9-7. This program and ticket stub enjoy the special provenance of originating from the personal collection of Keith Sutton, who was one of the founding members of SABR (Society for American Baseball Research). (A number of Sutton's other personal souvenirs, including cards, programs, and autographs, are offered as separate lots elsewhere in this auction.) Sutton, whose biography can be viewed on the SABR website (http://sabr.org/content/sabr-salute-keith-sutton), was a Giants fan, so it's no surprise that he attended the game to cheer on the National League. An inveterate collector, it's also no surprise that he saved these items. As was his custom, Sutton has written many of the game's particulars along the top of the cover in pencil: "1934 All-Star Game/Tues. July 10, 1934 - American League All Stars 9 National League All Stars 7." The eight-page program (6.5 x 10 inches) has not been scored and aside from the written notations on the front and some very minor toning on the reverse, it remains in extraordinary Near Mint condition. The ticket stub (2.25 x 2 inches) also features Sutton's handwritten pencil notations on the reverse, including the score of the game, and is otherwise in Near Mint condition. Both the program and ticket stub are the finest examples, respectively, that we have handled from this game, made all the more desirable by their provenance. Total: 2 items (program and ticket stub). Reserve $300. Estimate $1,000+.
