One-page contract, dated March 19, 1956, between Joe DiMaggio and the Devoe & Reynolds Company, Inc., signed by Joe DiMaggio. The agreement calls for DiMaggio to receive a retainer of $1,000 a month, for six months, as a sales promotional consultant with the company. As per the terms, at the end of six months the contract could be extended if both parties were willing. The contract has been signed in blue ink by DiMaggio (grading "9") and Doran S. Weinstein, executive vice president and general manager of Devoe & Reynolds. Obviously, this agreement did not suit one or both of the parties, as indicated by the handwritten notation on the front that reads "agreement terminated as of April 30, 1956 - 2 payments made D&R 5/18/56." A similar handwritten notation appears on the reverse: "Joe DiMaggio Retainer Agreement - Terminated 5/17/56 as of 4/30/56." DiMaggio was five years into his retirement at the time of this contract, but he was still one of the most popular athletes of his day, a fact not lost on Madison Avenue executives. Early DiMaggio endorsement contracts are scarce, making this a desirable DiMaggio signed piece dating from the 1950s. The contract (8.5 x 11 inches), printed on onion-skin, displays two horizontal folds, two staple holes, a few edge tears, and a rust stain along the right border caused by a paper clip. In Very Good condition overall. Full LOA from PSA/DNA and LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $414.75
