Extraordinary clarity distinguishes this real-photo postcard picturing action from the 1906 World Series between the Chicago Cubs and Chicago White Sox at West Side Park. Taken from the vantage point of the grandstand behind the first-base dugout, this photo appears, at first glance, to picture a game in progress. Closer examination, however, reveals that it actually shows pre-game activities. The Cubs, dressed in their home whites, are taking batting practice while members of the White Sox, decked out in their resplendent solid-blue uniforms, can be seen in front of their dugout either warming up or taking part in a pepper game. The stands are filled to capacity and a photographer stands near home plate taking pictures. The printed caption along the base reads "World's Championship Series - Published by Maurice Wells & Co. Chicago." The Chicago White Sox, dubbed "The Hitless Wonders," upset the heavily favored Cubs in the 1906 World Series to win their first World Championship in franchise history. The postcard (5.5 x 3.5 inches) displays a handwritten message on the reverse and is postmarked "Oct 18 1907." Light diagonal impressions, which are the result of the postcard having once been mounted with photo corners, are faintly visible in each of the four corners, but only when viewed at certain angles, otherwise in Excellent condition overall. We have only seen one other example of this rare postcard, which was also postmarked October, 1907. That fact leads us to believe that these postcards might have been sold at the stadium during the 1907 World Series between the Cubs and the Tigers. From the Ron Menchine Collection. Reserve $100.
