Rare felt pennant dating from the 1929 World Series between the Chicago Cubs and Philadelphia Athletics. This pennant, issued at Wrigley Field, features an illustration of a catcher and is lettered "Souvenir of Cubs World Series Chicago 1929." This is not only the first example of this pennant we have ever offered, but the first we have ever seen. The only other 1929 World Series pennant known to us is one that features the names of both the Cubs and Athletics. It is also one of only two Cubs pennants in general we have seen dating from the 1929 pennant-winnng season. The 1929 World Series was painful for Chicago fans. After dropping the first two games in Chicago, the Cubs rebounded by defeating the A's 3-1 in Game 3. They then looked poised to even the Series at two games a piece after forging an 8-0 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh inning in Game 4. Unfortunately, it was not to be as the Cubs surrendered ten runs in the bottom of the frame, a rally that won the game, and ultimately, the Series for the A's. Perhaps the nature of that loss in Game 4 is the reason why this pennant is so rare today: few fans wanted any tangible reminder of what was one of the worst collapses in World Series history. Regardless of any explanation for its scarcity today, it remains a very attractive and displayable souvenir from Chicago's only World Series appearance during the 1920s. The pennant (twenty-three inches in length), which is lightly faded, has a large tack hole in the tip, and two smaller tack holes located, respectively, in each of the corners on the left border. Light soiling is evident on the white left border and tassels. All of the paint on the illustration and letters is complete, displaying no chips and only light crazing. Without reference to the minor flaws noted, it is otherwise in Excellent condition overall. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $1,293
