Graded EX 5 by PSA. Very sharp looking, mid- to high-grade example of 1940 Play Ball Joe DiMaggio, one of collecting's most famous cards, featuring the "Yankee Clipper" in his familiar swing-through pose. One of card collecting's classics of the era, this is one of the keys to the 1940 Play Ball set, and one of the most popular of all prewar baseball cards. This striking example has four square corners, a crystal clear image, and is centered very slightly to the right. The reverse has natural even toning from age, and upon close inspection we detect a slightly lighter area in the center that suggests it may have long ago been removed from an album. "Excellent" is a more impressive grade for Joe DiMaggio's 1940 Play Ball card than for other cards in the set. This card is very difficult to find in high grade because it is the #1 card in the set. Kids often put these cards in numerical order, naturally subjecting the first card number to additional wear. An exceptional example of one of the key cards from the 1940 Play Ball set and one of the most popular cards of the era. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$800.
