Twenty-three members of the World Champion 1927 New York Yankees have signed this Harwood "Professional" ball in either blue or black fountain pen. It must be noted that this is an unusual ball in that it includes ten "clubhouse" signatures (a very common practice at the time), among them Ruth. Despite that fact, it is still a highly significant piece due to the inclusion of high-grade signature examples of both Lou Gehrig and Joe Giard. The signature of Joe Giard, who only played with the Yankees for one season, is incredibly rare and represents a "holy grail" for autograph collectors wishing to assemble a complete 1927 Yankees autograph collection. The authentic signatures featured on this ball are those of Gehrig ("9/10"), Shocker, Pipgrass, Combs, Lazzeri, Giard ("9"), Grabowski, Koenig, Morehart, Shawkey, Gazella, Meusel, and Pennock. The clubhouse signatures are those of Ruth (sweet spot), Wera, Durst, Bengough, Collins, Moore, Thomas, Dugan, Reuther, and Hoyt. The signatures have all been boldly penned and grade "8/9" on average. The ball displays areas of moderate discoloration, most of which are relegated to two opposing side panels (not the Gehrig or Giard panels) and is in Very Good condition overall. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $3,231.25
