Atlanta Braves home jersey worn in 1984 by former two-time National League MVP Dale Murphy. Graded a perfect A10 by MEARS. The white knit jersey is lettered "Braves" across the front and features the number "3" on the left breast and reverse. "Murphy" is lettered on the reverse above the number. All front letters and numerals are appliquéd in blue on white tackle twill (bordered with red stitching). All reverse letters are appliquéd in solid blue tackle twill (upon a nameplate). The year ("84") is chain-stitched in blue upon a white strip tag located on the left front tail. A "Wilson 44" label appears in the collar. Murphy has signed the jersey in blue Sharpie (grading "8/9") on the reverse, directly below the number. A black-ink stamp on the interior rear tail reads "Purchased From Atlanta Braves." The jersey is completely original, with no alterations, and displays moderate wear including a few tiny stains on the front. Braves center fielder Dale Murphy was arguably the best all-around player in baseball in 1984. Murphy won the National League MVP Award in both 1982 and 1983, and his 1984 totals once again ranked among the League leaders. Murphy tied Mike Schmidt for the National League lead in home runs (36) and finished the year with 100 RBI, a .290 average, and a League-leading .547 slugging percentage. He also won his third consecutive Gold Glove Award at season's end. Murphy retired in 1993 with 398 home runs, 1,266 RBI, and a .265 lifetime average. Graded A10 by MEARS. Murphy is a particularly rare jersey for a relatively modern slugger. This is currently the only Dale Murphy jersey listed in the MEARS population report. This jersey has been consigned to this auction directly from the personal collection/inventory of world-renowned bat and jersey authenticators David Bushing and/or Troy Kinunen. LOAs from Dave Bushing & Troy Kinunen/MEARS and James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500. SOLD FOR $5,287.50
