Hardcover edition of Maybe I'll Pitch Forever by Satchel Paige (Doubleday & Company, Inc., New York, 1962), signed by Paige in blue ink on the title page. Paige's signature is large and bold and grades a "6+" overall. Paige had few occasions to sign copies of this book, which is quite rare even unsigned with its original dust jacket. When this volume was released, Paige was a baseball legend but it would still be nine years until he was elected to the Hall of Fame and many more until great stars of years past could earn a living signing autographs and making personal appearances. Satchel Paige was not only one of the game's greatest pitchers, he was an American folk hero. A star for nearly three decades in the Negro Leagues, in 1948 he became the oldest rookie in Major League history when he joined the Cleveland Indians at the age of forty-two. Despite being well past his prime, Paige went 6-1 during his rookie campaign and helped lead Cleveland to its first World Championship in twenty-eight years. Paige was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1971 and he passed away in 1982. Signed copies of this book are extremely rare. The 285-page book (5.5 x 8.5 inches) displays moderate wear to the blue cloth boards and is otherwise in Excellent condition. The original dust jacket is in Excellent condition.
