The excitement generated by Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris' historic pursuit of Babe Ruth's single-season home run record in 1961 quickly resulted in the manufacture of a multitude of retail products bearing their endorsement. One of the most attractive such items from the era was a baseball-theme radio produced by Stellar. Offered here is a fine example of that classic piece. Housed within a wood case, the unit has a molded plastic front featuring the raised-relief image of a generic batter (in a Yankees uniform) displayed over the speaker panel. The tuning knob is constructed in the form of a ball and bat, while the green on/off knob is diamond-shaped. The facsimile signatures of Mantle and Maris appear along the base. The facing displays a thin line of discoloration running from the tuning knob to the on/off control, and the case exhibits light wear. We have not tested the radio for fear of possibly damaging the piece (the original electrical wiring remains intact, though slightly frayed) and, as always when dealing with very old electrical pieces, we recommend that the winning bidder first have it examined by a qualified electrician prior to plugging it in. Excellent condition overall. Dimensions: 7 (W) x 3.75 (D) x 5.25 (H) inches. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$600.
