Original painting by renowned sports artist Robert Simon, circa 1987, features Mickey Mantle in full uniform, with bat in hand, against a large blue-sky background. Mantle has twice signed the painting. The first signature ("8/9") was in thick black marker, originally signed on a blank canvas, at the request of artist Robert Simon, when the painting was created. It is interesting to note that close examination even shows clearly that Simon has actually "painted around" the signature. The buyer of the painting was never quite happy with the signature, wanting a darker, crisper signature executed with a thinner writing instrument, so later he arranged for Mantle to add a second signature at a convention at which Mantle was signing in Atlantic City in 1988. The second signature was signed "Mickey Mantle No. 7 6/4/'88" ("10") in black ink. This is a simply outstanding painting by Robert Simon, whose works have been prominently displayed in many museums, including the Baseball Hall of Fame and The National Academy of Fine Arts. A unique twice-signed original painting of Mickey Mantle by one of the sporting world's most prominent artists. Near Mint condition. The painting measures 23.5 x 30 inches. Beautifully matted and framed to dimensions of 32 x 38 inches. LOAs from Mike Gutierrez/GAI and James Spence & Steve Grad/PSA DNA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $2,300.00
