Extremely rare, possibly unique, celluloid pinback featuring the 1902 National League Pennant Winners, the Pittsburgh Pirates. The original back paper is intact, and identifies the pin as manufactured by "The Whitehead & Hoag Co." of Newark, New Jersey, the leading button and novelty company of the day. The pin pays tribute to the1902 Pittsburgh Pirates, one of the greatest teams of the era, and includes Hall of Famers Honus Wagner, Fred Clarke, and Jack Chesbro. The 1902 Pittsburgh Pirates romped through the season with a 103-36 record, a winning percentage of .741, the second-best ever compiled in the twentieth century. The Pirates easily won the National League Pennant by 27-1/2 games over the Brooklyn Dodgers. There was no World Series in 1902 (the World Series was introduced in 1903), so the pin refers to the Pirates simply as the "Pennant Winners" and "Champions 1902." Absolutely flawless contrast and simply extraordinary quality provides incredible detail, allowing for the individual face of each player (and with a loop, even their expressions) to be seen. We have never seen or heard of another example of this great and significant celluloid pinback rarity. Near Mint to Mint. Reserve $800. Estimate $1,500/$2,500. SOLD FOR $1,840.00
