1956 Topps Mickey Mantle & Hank Aaron
Only Game in Town: 1956 Topps Baseball Card Overview
Card Specs: 2.63" x 3.75" | 340 cards | Full Color | Postwar/Vintage
Released during the peak of baseball’s postwar boom, the 340-card 1956 Topps release expanded significantly over prior years, and refined the horizontal format introduced in 1955 with richer artwork and more detailed stadium backdrops. Fresh off acquiring Bowman and its exclusive player contracts, Topps firmly established itself as the game’s dominant card producer.
Star power carries the checklist. Most notably, the set features Mickey Mantle’s (#135) triumphant return to Topps, in a year where he won the AL Triple Crown, MVP, on his way to a World Series title.
In addition to Mantle, the lineup of established legends is extensive and includes Ted Williams (#5), Willie Mays (#130), Hank Aaron (#31), Roberto Clemente (#33), Sandy Koufax (#79), Ernie Banks (#15), Bob Feller (#200), and Whitey Ford (#240), giving the 1956 Topps set a deep concentration of Golden Era talent and sustained collector appeal. Beyond perhaps Luis Aparicio (#292), the 1956 Topps set lacks iconic rookie cards of previous years.
1956 Topps Card Specs & Design
The cards measure 3-3/4" x 2-5/8" and were printed on either white or gray stock, with examples of cards #1-180 appearing with both back variations. The design continues the dual-image format from 1955, pairing a large color portrait with a smaller action scene while placing players against detailed ballpark or field backgrounds. Bold player and team identification appears in the corner, complemented by a facsimile autograph. Backs feature career statistics and a cartoon panel larger than previous years, highlighting player achievements and replacing a text-heavy biographical section from previous issues.
Cards up to #180 can appear with either a white or gray back, with grey being slightly more common in cards #1-100, and significantly more rare in cards #101-180. Cards #181-340 will only have gray backs. Cards were distributed nationally in one-card penny packs, six-card nickel packs, and 15-card cello packs, all packaged with a stick of gum. Centering issues, both horizontal and vertical, are common condition issues among surviving examples, in addition to wear from being handled by young collectors.
