Presented is the ONLY known "leaning on bat" pose of Hall of Famer Ty Cobb from the 1916 Tango Brand Eggs series! To the best of our knowledge, this is the only Tango Eggs card of Ty Cobb (leaning on bat pose) known to exist. (REA just recently offered a previously uncatalogued batting pose of Cobb in 2019, realizing $66,000.) We are very familiar with this particular card as this is the second time we have had the privilege of offering it. This card originated from a newly discovered collection in Louisiana along with other 1910-era tobacco and Cracker Jack cards. The card was offered at public auction for the first time in April 2011, selling for $17,641 at that time. The buyer from that auction then consigned the card to us in 2017, where it appeared as Lot #947 in our April auction and sold for $15,600. The purchaser at that auction has now consigned the card to us. Tango Brand Eggs cards are very similar in design to the 1915 E106 American Caramel set, but with different captions that do not reference Federal League teams since they were issued in 1916. The fronts have a glossy coating similar to E106 and T214 Kotton Tobacco cards. The backs feature advertising for L. Frank & Company's Tango Brand Eggs. This is a fascinating card. It is very likely unique. Despite its extremely modest condition, (What can we say? It's a little rough!), it is the ONLY known "leaning on bat" pose of key Hall of Famer Ty Cobb from the 1916 Tango Brand Eggs set, one of prewar card collecting's most legendary sets. Encapsulated POOR 1 by SGC. Reserve $5,000. Estimate (open).
