Incredible near-complete set (58 of 62 cards) of 1999 Pokemon Fossil 1st Edition, entirely graded and encapsulated GEM MINT 10 by PSA. The Fossil set is particularly significant in the Pokemon community as it represents the third and final series released by Wizards of the Coast in 1999, following the Base and Jungle sets, that combine to feature the original 151 Pokemon. Pokemon characters featured for the first time in this set are essentially the equivalent to rookie cards in sports sets. In addition to rounding out the original 151-card "Pokedex" series, the Fossil set is renowned by collectors for its outstanding artwork. Like the other Pokemon issues, cards in this set feature rounded corners, yellow borders, and a blue reverse that prominently displays the iconic Pokemon logo. The Fossil set can be identified by the skeletal symbol located just under the bottom right corner of the picture, while the "Edition 1" marking is displayed under the picture on the opposite side (on the "Trainer" cards these markings appear on the bottom of the card). The set is broken down by levels of rarity. Cards #1-15 feature holographic Pokemon and are the most rare, #16-30 are considered rare, #31-45 are considered to be uncommon, and #46-62 are the common cards in the set. This near-complete set is missing only the following four cards for completion: #2 Articuno Holographic, 4 Dragonite Holographic, 5 Gengar Holographic, and 10 Lapras Holographic (all of which are offered as individual lots in this auction). This is an outstanding set, assembled with a strict focus on perfection, which would make a worthy addition to any non-sport, Pokemon, or trading card game collection. The SMR value of the fifty-eight PSA-graded cards is $3,545. Total: 58 cards. Reserve $2,000. Estimate (open).
