Original pencil sketch of Jackie Robinson, signed by Robinson to the left of his image. Robinson has inscribed the piece "To Timmy and Terry from Jackie Robinson" in black ink, with both the text and signature grading "8/9" overall. The portrait pictures Robinson as a member of the Brooklyn Dodgers and has been signed by the artist, "Marshall Merrill," in the lower right corner. Not much is known about Merrill except that he published a series of art prints featuring members of the Milwaukee Braves, similar in style to the offered artwork, that were sold at County Stadium in 1953 and 1954. While we cannot state with certainty, perhaps this drawing of Robinson was one in a series of Dodgers prints he was hoping to market at Ebbets Field about the same time. The original artwork (7 x 9.5 inches), rendered on paper, displays a tack hole in each corner and is otherwise in Excellent condition. Full LOA from PSA/DNA. Reserve $300. Estimate (open).
